How Does it Work?

Wijit Tetra wheel labled.
The Wijit Wheel
Introduction

The Wijit is simple to use. After a brief orientation, most are off and rolling within a few minutes. The innovative and elegant design is easy to use by people affected by traumatic and degenerative conditions such as Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Tetraplegia, Hemiplegia, TBI, Cerebrovascular Accidents, Fractures, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Polio, ALS, Various Ataxias, Stroke, Severe Congestive Heart Failure, Spina Bifida Diabetes, Decreased neuromuscular functions in the lower extremities, Decreased neuromuscular function in all extremities and Obesity. While extended power chair use deteriorates the user’s overall condition, use of a Wijit equipped chair enhances the user’s strength and cardiovascular health.

Shifting Lever Drive Mode

Wijit Tetra shifter and handle. At the top of the Wijit’s handle is the shifter, with three positions the user can shift between forward, neutral, and reverse modes. When in the middle position, the driver lever is in neutral mode (disengaged), allowing the user to use their push-rims or be pushed. Rotating the shifter clockwise 90°, the driver lever is engaged into forward mode, allowing the user to push the wheel forward. From the forward position, rotating the shifter counterclockwise 90° returns the driver lever back to neutral mode. By then rotating the shifter 90° counterclockwise, the driver lever is engaged in reverse mode, allowing the user to pull back to move the wheel backwards.

Shifter Paddle Options

One inch paddle shifter pictured with part of handle.Designed for Wijit users with diminished hand function, the shifter paddles enable the user to switch driver modes without requiring grip by pushing on the paddle using their hand or forearm. For some users, it is easier to use the hand or forearm from one side of the body to shift drive modes in the opposite side. The shifter paddles are installed by SuperQuad or an authorized dealer and come in lengths of 1" or 2".

Moving the Wheelchair

The user grips each lever arm handle grip and moves forward or reverse, propelling the wheels in the same direction. Similar to a bicycle, the Wijit remains engaged as the wheelchair is propelled. Each lever arm is independent of the other. One side can be moved forward while the other is moved in reverse, permitting the wheelchair to “pivot in place”. After entering an elevator, a user can “turn on a dime” to face the door quickly and easily.

Braking and Steering

Braking is achieved by pulling the lever arm handles inwards towards the user's body. Each wheel brakes independently, which also enhances steering ability.

When performing a transfer, sitting at a dinner table, or at a desk in the office, the Wijit’s lever arms can be pivoted back into the “stowed position” where they are conveniently moved out of the way.

Quick Release Wheel Removal

The Wijit Plus and the Wijit Voyager include a quick-release push-button conveniently located on the outside of the Wijit hub for even easier wheel removal. The user simply pushes the button to remove the Wijit and wheel. The original wheels can then be replaced. The Wijit's adapter kit has no effect upon the original wheels.

Pinned Quick Release
The Wijit includes a pinned quick-release system that allows the wheel to be removed. The user pulls a pin located on the axle and this allows the Wijit and wheel to be removed. The wheelchair's original wheels then slip right onto the axle without having to replace the pin. The Wijit's adapter kit has no effect upon the original wheels.
