The American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) is an organization whose purpose is to encourage and foster the exchange of information and ideas among biomechanists working in different disciplines and fields of application, to facilitate the development of biomechanics as a basic and applied science. The "Biomechanics of Upper Extremity during Wheelchair Propulsion" report was submitted as part of the ASB's 2006 Annual Meeting held at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Virginia. The report discusses its study and findings of the detrimental effects of wheelchair propulsion on a person's shoulders, elbows, and wrists using the standard manual wheelchair pushrim.

The Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center is a world-renowned Gait and Motion Analysis Center. As part of a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center project recently funded by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research, we are investigating and designing methods of manual wheelchair propulsion that are less stressful to the shoulder structures of individuals with spinal cord injury....
